World Meeting Popular Movements
On Friday, February 17, HIFIS director john a. powell opened the regional U.S. gathering of the World Meeting of Popular Movements in Modesto, California. Speaking to an invite-only audience of 20 U.S. bishops—including the second highest-ranking Vatican official, Cardinal Turkson—and 600+ Catholic and secular leaders involved with PICO, Dr. powell's comments helped to frame the gathering's conversation on race through an understanding of implicit bias, and the role the Catholic Church could play in confronting interpersonal/structural racialization.
