Strategic Narrative 101 Curriculum

Building a New Narrative for All of California

The Blueprint for Belonging network has published a curriculum on strategic narrative that will support the political development of staff and grassroots leaders. The curriculum is comprised of modules designed to build the capacity of people in the social justice movement field to analyze and strategize using the B4B framework for strategic narrative.  It is designed to be accessible and relevant to community organizers and communications specialists. It includes 1) facilitator agendas that leaders can customize and use in trainings and strategy sessions; 2) a slide deck that goes through the basic concepts related to strategic narrative and strategic analysis; 3) supporting materials like images, handouts, worksheets, supplemental readings and videos that complement the training.

The three modules consist of:

  • Module I: Strategic Narrative 101, which covers the values, vision and analysis that undergirds a strategic narrative.  It also includes a section on the characteristics of the dominant narrative and the components of a progressive strategic narrative.

  • Module II: The Root Causes of Inequality, which focuses on the neoliberal economic and political agendas as well as the legal and social barriers that have led to stark inequality. (In Development)

  • Module III: From the Politics of Othering to the Politics of Belonging, which explores how the manipulation of fear and anxiety, especially of the racial “other”, give rise to exclusion and oppression. It also investigates  the concepts of belonging and the building of bridges that support a shared progressive identity. (In Development)

Together, the curriculum modules provide a broad overview of the B4B strategic narrative and analysis that can be a major component in the political alignment of social movements across issue areas, policy campaigns and identities.
