Huzaifa Shahbaz is a student researcher with the Haas Institute's Global Justice Program. He is currently an M.A. Candidate in Islamic Studies at the Graduate Theological Union. His current research focuses on the global rise of ethno-nationalism and demagoguery. Prior to joining the Haas Institute, he served as a research assistant at the Center for Labor Studies at UC Santa Cruz studying the local housing crisis. He assisted in surveying families about their experiences with the local housing crisis and also conducted data analysis for the No Place like Home Project. Motivated by his own personal experiences in academic research, Huzaifa hopes to pursue a career in academia or investigative journalism to amplify the voices of those structurally excluded from the mainstream press. His other research interests include Islamic law and Islamophobia studies. Huzaifa is originally from San Francisco and graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology.
