SEEKING INDEPENDENT CONTRACT EDITOR FOR NEW PUBLICATION ON OTHERING & BELONGING

About the Position

The Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society is seeking an Experienced Editor with demonstrated publishing and editorial experience to help launch and grow a new online and print publication entitled Othering & Belonging: Expanding the Circle of Human Concern.

This new publication (the “Journal”) reflects the broader vision and mission of the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society by investigating, exploring, and exposing the character and reproduction of social cleavages across different social domains—political, economic, social, and cultural. Such cleavages result from processes of “Othering” groups in order to establish and maintain social hierarchies of power, privilege, and access to resources. Ideally, this new publication will establish a broad, analytic framework by which distinct and overlapping forms of Othering and inequality can be understood and challenged.

Othering & Belonging features articles and content that look at specific forms of marginalization, but also emphasize the dynamic interrelationship between them. To this end, the editorial mission of the Journal is to create and sustain a dialogue where, for example, a specific social problem (e.g., residential segregation, healthcare reform, incarceration) can be understood and examined by how it impacts different groups and social cleavages.

The new Journal is designed to be broadly accessible to audiences outside of academia. To make the Journal a space for the vibrant exchange of ideas and practices across disciplines, fields, and domains, the Journal Editor will solicit articles from not only scholars and academics, but from policy analysts, social activists, and from cultural changemakers as well.

Initially, Othering & Belonging will be published two issues a year with the anticipation that it could become a quarterly publication.
